Locws Schools 2014/15: Oystermouth Primary School

Even though we had to dodge the weather, we managed to complete a successful tour. This was evident in the class room as Year 5 made some amazing sculptures.
On the tour whilst viewing ‘Dylan’s Pencil’, Georgie said that “Dylan Thomas used to write here with a pencil”. Jess thought that the textures in the tree looked like faces and Ava asked if the artist was thinking about a giant when creating the work.
Josh said,  “Does the artist take simple objects like a pencil and make them into sculpture?” Luca asked if the artist was writing something down when he thought that he could make the pencil that he was using into a sculpture.

Hannah commented on the Mural by  Pete Fowler, “its very bold and iconic” and Rhys thought that the man’s brain had exploded pasting his thoughts onto the wall. Tyson thought that Dylan was thinking about his poems.
When we returned to the classroom we made; Pirate ships with text on the sails, castles with flying saucers, surfboards with murals on and a giant pencil bursting out from the ground which coloured all in its path. Georgie said that she thought all the sculptures were really good and everyone worked really hard “it brought us closer together to help each other”, she said. Rhys said, “you feel that you could just jump into the sculptures and be in those worlds”. Luca said, “I like the project because we can make ideas in our own ways”.

Josh said that there was good communication, different tasks to do and we leant different skills. Jess said, “I love how they are all so different yet all work together”. Roan said, “We got to do and make art that we wouldn’t normally do”. Milly said, “It’s not work just fun’’.
