Referencing the exotic fantasy world of the Brangwyn Panels, Helen Sear’s ‘Plantasia’ was photographed in Swansea’s tropical hothouse.
The proximity of Plantasia to the shopping complex provides both a contrast to and an extension of, the “dream of escape” described by Henri Rousseau when he visited the glass houses of Paris to study for his paintings of the jungle, and the closed eyes of Helen’s subjects allows them a space of private reverie amidst the forensic gaze of the camera.
Art Across The City is an exciting public art programme designed and delivered by LOCWS International, an artist-led charity based in the City of Swansea. LOCWS International commissions international and UK-based artists to create new contemporary artworks for accessible public spaces across the city.
A broad range of artworks are produced from sculpture, painting and installation to performance and film and each is inspired by an aspect of the city’s culture, heritage, architecture, people or landscape.
