LOCWS INTERNATIONAL: PRESS RELEASE 22.07.08

Auditions set for ‘Canine Choir’ to create a musical tribute to Swansea Jack

Swansea has produced a myriad of artists, writers, poets, playwrights and musicians over the years however a new art project is calling on some of the city’s less well-known stars to step forward with the formation of a ‘canine choir’ to create a new musical tribute to legendary local hero ‘Swansea Jack’.

Artist Richard Higlett has taken inspiration from the well-loved story of Swansea Jack, a black retriever who became a local hero in the 1930’s for rescuing drowning swimmers from Swansea’s docks. The project, commissioned by Locws International as part of Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts, will see Richard audition a selection of dogs from the city to form a ‘canine choir’ to create and perform a new song in celebration of the hero. ‘A Song For Jack’ will then be transcribed into a published piece of music and preformed at a special one-off concert in the city.

“Dogs sing together instinctively as part of a pack, their sense of community. In Swansea there are so many breeds with different characters and voices and all have a relationship, like us, with the place in which they live. I felt it a fitting homage to Swansea Jack whose instinct was to be a hero. It is also about fun, a celebration.” said artist Richard Higlett.

Auditions for the choir are set for Sunday 17th August from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm in the garden of the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea. All dogs are welcome to attend and a panel will decide who makes it into the choir.

Does your dog like to sing? Richard is currently looking for dogs to join the choir and take part in his project. If your dog can sing, you can get involved by emailing locws@locwsinternational.com or calling 01792 468979. For further information visit www.artacrossthecity.com

Dates: Auditions will be held on Sunday 17th August 11.00 am - 4.00 pm in the garden of the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.
