LOCWS
INTERNATIONAL: PRESS RELEASE 24.03.07 An orchestra of domestic and industrial machines performs sporadically, surprising and alarming its viewers; a floating raft made from driftwood and found objects peacefully sits in a marina full of shiny yachts; and a huge projection of an artist learning to fly pervades Swansea’s main church, St.Mary’s. These additions to the city of Swansea are just some of the temporary artworks created by 11 artists from across Europe and the UK who have visited Swansea to discover more about it’s rich history, heritage, people and culture and to create the new artworks in response to their experiences of the city. Locws 3: Art Across the City promises to be a feast of visual and sonic creations in public and outdoor venues throughout Swansea, and the artists have employed a wide-range of materials and media including painted murals, video projection, sound-works, photography, textiles and sculpture. “The artists have used a wide range of aspects of Swansea to create really thought-provoking pieces” said Co- Director David Hastie “they have spent time in the city, looking at its history and how it has evolved. There are works inspired by the Brangwyn panels, Dylan Thomas and even the Ospreys Rugby team”. “Swansea is an evolving city and this event highlights some of the ways in which it has changed, not only in its architecture and new developments, but in its culture and outlook. It’s become far more of a cosmopolitan European city and these artists have really picked up on that,” said Grace Davies, Project Manager.
The event will be open from 14 April and run until 13th
May 2007. The venues include Swansea Museum, National Waterfront Museum,
Swansea Marina, The Norwegian Church, SA1, St. Mary’s Church, Central
Library, The Guildhall Council Chamber, The Guildhall Green and The Dylan
Thomas Theatre. Detailed brochures will be available to pick up from all
venues or visit the website www.artacrossthecity.com LOCWS 3: ART ACROSS THE CITY is supported by the The Arts Council of Wales, The City & County of Swansea, The Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust, Wales Arts International, Cywaith Cymru - Artworks Wales, The Henry Moore Foundation, National Waterfront Museum, Welsh Assembly Government - SA1 Swansea Waterfront and Swansea Institute
