LOCWS
INTERNATIONAL: PRESS RELEASE 27.03.07
'A brighter view for Swansea'
Visitors will soon notice some colourful changes within
the marina area where a new mural is in the process of being painted onto
the rear walls of the Dylan Thomas Theatre. The mural, which is designed
and painted by Irish artist Niamh McCann has been based on a painting
found in the Swansea Museum collection by James Harris Snr and collects
references to different elements of the Swansea landscape.
Entitled Flock of Ospreys looking for the old blind sea captain who dreams
of his deceased sea fellows under a visiting African Sun, it is a contemporary
colourful landscape which references Dylan Thomas’ Under Milkwood
as well as the Ospreys Rugby Team.
This piece will be part of Locws 3: Art Across the City; temporary artworks
created by 11 artists from across Europe and the UK who have visited Swansea
to discover more about it’s rich history, heritage, people and culture
and to create the new artworks in response to their experiences of the
city.
Niamh said of her involvement with the project “It is an exciting
challenge and I have received warm support from Swansea’s residents.
I’m enjoying being here.”
Locws 3: Art Across the City promises to be a feast of visual and sonic
creations in public and outdoor venues throughout Swansea, and the artists
have employed a wide-range of materials and media including painted murals,
video projection, sound-works, photography, textiles and sculpture.
“Swansea is an evolving city and this event highlights some of the
ways in which it has changed, not only in its architecture and new developments,
but in its culture and outlook. It’s become far more of a cosmopolitan
European city and these artists have really picked up on that,”
said Grace Davies, Project Manager.
The event will be open from 14 April and run until 13th May 2007. The
venues include Swansea Museum, National Waterfront Museum, Swansea Marina,
The Norwegian Church, SA1, St. Mary’s Church, Central Library, The
Guildhall Council Chamber, The Guildhall Green and The Dylan Thomas Theatre.
Detailed brochures will be available to pick up from all venues or visit
