We are very pleased to have commissioned artist, Matthew Houlding for Art Across The City 2013.
Matthew’s sculptures draw us into a fantastic, retro-futuristic world, inspired by architectural forms and models, modernism and a childhood spent in East Africa. Houlding’s recent sculptures and collages are an homage to the utopian zeal of modern architecture, suggesting an inherent optimism and sublime future.
The work in Swansea is a free standing spatial construction, balancing interlocking and overlapping planes with a tropical colour scheme of orange, yellow and blue. It combines sculpture, architecture, design and painting and is clean cut, sharp edged and graphic in appearance, a three dimensional logo informed by structuralist and formalist architecture.
Although it is s self contained and creates its own space, it’s placement on the rotunda in front of Swansea’s Guildhall, not only mirrors the building’s tower but references the nearby beach.
Matthew Houlding is represented by Ceri Hand Gallery, London.
We would like to thank Chris at Arciform for his help in producing Matthew’s work.
